At Friday's CCCA AGM, Mike Milne received the 2025 Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his consistent and courageous reporting on The United Church of Canada for more than three decades. Milne was The United Church Observer’s senior staff writer from the 1980s until his retirement in 2019. To this day, he continues freelancing for the magazine, now called Broadview. You can find his more recent stories here: https://broadview.org/author/mike-milne/
“In all his work, Mike helped define what editorial independence could and should mean in the context of Christian journalism,” writes Broadview Editor and Publisher Jocelyn Bell. “His dedication is perhaps best exemplified by his uninterrupted coverage of United Church General Council meetings since 1992. His reporting on these events not only captured the official decisions but also the spirited, sometimes messy, deeply human theatre of church life. Mike understood that behind every motion and amendment were people earnestly trying to live out their faith, and he honoured that reality with humility and accuracy.”
“Mike’s contribution is not merely in the stories he wrote,” continues Bell, “but in the historical record he created — an unmatched archive of church life across decades. As we approach the United Church’s 100th anniversary in June, it is hard to imagine a single individual who has contributed more diligently or more frequently to documenting its journey.”

The CCCA is grateful for this opportunity to recognize Mike Milne's longtime commitment to reporting with integrity, nuance and rigour. The landscape of faith-based journalism in Canada is enriched by his contributions and indebted to his example.
